Kate and I laid our beloved dog Maggie to rest on Friday, November 3. Maggie was our faithful companion for over fifteen years, moving with us from Benton Harbor, Michigan, across the state to Flint, and across the country to San Francisco. Over the past few months our walks became increasingly shorter. Over the last month Maggie slowed down even more: she found it harder to climb our stairs, and the effects of numerous tumors affected her digestion. These difficulties increased dramatically in her last week, letting us know that it was time to make the difficult phone call to a compassionate vet who makes house-calls for such purposes. Through it all, Maggie’s spirits were good. She went peacefully, eating bits of bacon as her viaticum – holy food to get her to the other side – as the anesthetic took effect.
Kate and I miss Maggie, and shall continue to miss her terribly. We know that many of you were fond of her as well, and we are thankful for the kindnesses you showed her when she came down the rectory’s back stairs to coffee hour. Maggie was also a favorite in the Haight-Ashbury, and we nearly always were asked, “Where’s Maggie?” when Kate and I walked the neighborhood without her.
God’s blessings and peace,
Dan+
